Namibia is poised to become Africa's fourth-largest oil producer, and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is considering inviting it to join the organization. OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais will address the International Energy Conference in Namibia on April 24, and will lead a delegation to hold technical consultations with the government of Namibia to study how the country can better play a role in the international oil market.

Galp Energia's initial exploration results from the Mopane-1X well in the Orange Basin, offshore Namibia, show that the well has a tested flow rate of 14,000 barrels per day and total oil reserves of more than 10 billion barrels. Shell has also struck new oil in the Orange Basin.
